Seven hospitalized after early-morning shooting on Kirkwood Avenue near IU Campus

BLOOMINGTON — At least seven people were hospitalized following an early-morning shooting on East Kirkwood Avenue in downtown Bloomington on Sunday, occurring amidst large crowds gathered hours after Indiana University’s homecoming football game.

The Bloomington Police Department (BPD) and Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) were already in the area monitoring a large gathering near Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street when gunshots broke out around 1:30 a.m. in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue. Responding officers immediately converged on the scene as the shots echoed through the busy nightlife district.

During the response, officers spotted a male suspect armed with a firearm running northeast away from the location of the gunfire. Following a foot pursuit, officers apprehended the man just east of Indiana Avenue, near Dunn Meadow on the IU campus. A firearm was recovered nearby. Authorities have not yet determined whether the detained individual fired any of the shots during the incident.

Seven individuals were treated at the scene and transported by ambulance to area hospitals for gunshot wounds. As of Sunday morning, no fatalities have been reported, and officials have not confirmed whether additional victims may have sought medical attention independently.

Investigators located shell casings from multiple calibers on the sidewalk near 420 E. Kirkwood Ave., pointing to the possibility of multiple firearms being involved. Preliminary statements from responding officers indicate that a disturbance broke out within the crowd shortly before the shooting began.

The shooting triggered a coordinated response across local agencies, with officers from the Indiana State Police assisting BPD and IUPD at the scene.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information, eyewitness accounts, or video footage of the incident to contact Detective Chris Scott at (812) 339-4477 or via email at scott@bloomington.in.gov.
