Indiana BMV extends branch hours ahead of Election Day to help voters obtain photo identification

INDIANA — The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) will extend operating hours at all branch locations on Monday, Nov. 2, and Tuesday, Nov. 3, to assist Hoosiers in obtaining required photo identification for the upcoming general election.

Branches will operate under the following extended schedule:

  • Monday, Nov. 2: Open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 3 (Election Day): Open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

During these extended hours, BMV branches will prioritize processing transactions specifically related to issuing new, amended, renewed, or replacement identification cards, learner permits, driver’s licenses, and Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs).

All branches will return to their regular business hours on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Free State-Issued IDs Available for Voting

To ensure all eligible citizens can vote, the Indiana BMV offers free state-issued ID cards for voting purposes. Any unlicensed Hoosier is eligible for a free ID card provided they are a U.S. citizen, will be at least 18 years of age on or before Election Day, and present the proper documentation.

To complete a transaction for a state ID or driver’s license, applicants must bring all required documentation, including:

  • Proof of Identity: A birth certificate or U.S. passport.
  • Proof of Social Security Number: A Social Security card, pay stub, or W-2 form.
  • Proof of Lawful Status: A birth certificate or U.S. passport.
  • Proof of Indiana Residency: Two separate documents displaying a residential address dated within the last 60 days, such as a utility bill or bank statement.
  • Proof of Name Change (if applicable): Legal documentation demonstrating a name change if the current legal name differs from the identity documents presented.

Acceptable Identification Options for Voters

State officials note that individuals holding an Indiana driver’s license or ID card that expired after the last general election (Nov. 5, 2024) may still use that expired card as valid proof of identification at the polls for voting purposes.

Additionally, the temporary paper interim credential issued to customers at a BMV branch during a transaction, or printed after completing an online request, is legally acceptable proof of identification for voting.
