WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jim Banks (R-Ind.) applauded the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) announcement that the Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor will receive an $11,205,600 grant through the Port Infrastructure Development Program for its Container Handling project.
Banks submitted a letter to the DOT in support of the project in June 2026.

Sen. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) said, “Burns Harbor is the beating heart of Indiana’s economy. This is a major grant to support the port’s Container Handling project and modernize its operations. I appreciate Secretary Duffy and the Department of Transportation recognizing the value of this project to Indiana.”

Erica Jackson, Chief Financial Officer of the Ports of Indiana, said, “This grant allows us to pair federal funding with our own capital investment to modernize cargo handling capabilities and support our launch of the international container service. We’re investing in more than equipment; we’re building the capacity to connect Indiana businesses with global markets and create lasting economic impact for the state.”
