SULLIVAN — A March 9, 2027, jury trial has been officially scheduled for 42-year-old Max J.C. Underhill of Washington, Indiana, who faces felony charges following a violent roadside attack and multi-agency manhunt in Sullivan County.

The case stems from an incident along U.S. 41 near Carlisle. According to Indiana State Police, Underhill was riding as a passenger in a vehicle when he allegedly attacked the driver, stabbing him multiple times.
The sudden assault caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the vehicle veering off the road and crashing into a fence. Following the wreck, Underhill fled on foot into a rural area, triggering an intensive, eight-hour manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies. Officers ultimately located and apprehended him late Friday afternoon in a wooded area near the Knox-Sullivan County line.
The victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Investigators also noted that Underhill had an active, outstanding arrest warrant out of Daviess County at the time of the incident.
During his initial appearance in Sullivan Circuit Court, Underhill faced formal charges including attempted murder and aggravated battery.
The judge set his bond at $100,000. A pretrial conference for the case is scheduled for December 14, 2026, ahead of the jury trial set for March 9, 2027.
