Father arrested in connection to tragic starvation death of 14-year-old daughter

BLOOMINGTON — A Bloomington man wanted in connection with the neglect and starvation death of his 14-year-old daughter was booked into the Monroe County Jail late Tuesday evening.

Jerry L. Mayfield Jr., 34, was booked into custody at 11:48 p.m. Tuesday on a Level 3 felony charge of neglect of a dependent, with bond set at $250,000. An initial court hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 21, in Monroe County Circuit Court before Judge Mary Ellen Diekhoff. He is being held on a $250,000 bond.

Law enforcement officials had been searching for Mayfield and his wife, Toris Mayfield, after warrants were issued for their arrest by Bloomington police on October 6. Both were located and taken into custody earlier this month in Osceola, Arkansas. As of Wednesday morning, Monroe County Jail records did not list booking details for Toris Mayfield.

The arrest follows a multi-month investigation into the July 2, 2025 death of 14-year-old Jamiyah Mayfield.

Emergency responders were initially called to the family’s Bloomington home after Toris Mayfield dialed 911 to report an unresponsive child. First responders found Jamiyah unconscious on the floor. She was rushed to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

According to court documents, investigators discovered severe physical deterioration:

In January 2025, Jamiyah weighed approximately 124 pounds. By the time of her death six months later, her body weight had plummeted to just 80 pounds.

Medical records indicate that in May 2025, Jamiyah was treated at IU Health for severe leg swelling, where staff documented noticeable weight loss, poorly controlled ADHD, and unexplained marks on her skin.

Video and Text Evidence Reveal Abuse

Investigators pieced together the final months of Jamiyah’s life using extensive digital evidence, including cellphone footage and Ring security camera recordings.

Court documents detail that Jerry Mayfield obtained full custody of Jamiyah in August 2024, with Toris Mayfield adopting her in November 2024. In the months that followed, investigators found that Jamiyah was methodically isolated and confined to her bedroom.

  • Bedroom Stripped Bare: Early home camera recordings showed Jamiyah’s bedroom fully furnished with typical items, including a bed, bedding, clothing, and carpet. Subsequent recordings revealed the room progressively stripped of its carpet, bedding, furniture, and personal items.
  • Physical Restraint: Detectives uncovered evidence of reversed door locks installed to lock the girl inside from the outside, as well as screws used to secure her bedroom windows shut.
  • Withholding Food: Text messages recovered between Jerry and Toris Mayfield explicitly detailed discussions about withholding meals and strictly limiting what Jamiyah was permitted to eat.
