SULLIVAN COUNTY — Law enforcement officers arrested a suspect late Friday afternoon following a multi-agency manhunt connected to a highway stabbing and subsequent vehicle crash in southern Sullivan County.

The suspect, identified as Max Underhill, 42, of Washington, Indiana, was taken into custody around 5:00 p.m. near the Knox and Sullivan County line.

According to police reports, the incident occurred on U.S. 41 northbound near the intersection of County Road 975 South, just south of Carlisle.

Investigators stated that Underhill was traveling as a passenger in a blue Dodge Challenger when he allegedly stabbed the driver. The attack led to a motor vehicle crash, after which Underhill fled the scene on foot.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

“The victim was taken to a local hospital where he is currently being treated for his injuries,” said Sgt. Kevin Getz of the Indiana State Police. “We’re not sure as to what the severity of those injuries are, but needless to say, he is being treated.”

  • Indiana State Police (Putnamville and Evansville districts)
  • Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office
  • Knox County Sheriff’s Office
  • Carlisle Police Department
  • Indiana Conservation Officers

Underhill was located and apprehended shortly after 5:00 p.m. without incident.
