STATEHOUSE – State Rep. Chris May (R-Bedford) recently presented Bedford Mayor Samuel J. Craig with the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash award.

With nearly 50 years of public service, Craig’s distinguished career has included serving with the Bedford Police Department, eight years as Lawrence County Sheriff, as a member of the Lawrence County Council, and as Bedford’s director of administrative services before becoming mayor in 2020. May said that Craig has dedicated his life to strengthening local government and improving quality of life in Bedford and Lawrence County.
“Sam Craig has dedicated his career to serving the people of Bedford and Lawrence County,” May said. “From his years in law enforcement to his leadership as mayor, he has worked to keep residents safe and improve the community he calls home.”
Dating back to the 1940s, the Sagamore of the Wabash award was created by former Gov. Ralph Gates. It is the highest honor the governor can bestow and is presented to distinguished Hoosiers who have made significant contributions to the state of Indiana.
May said that Craig is more than deserving of the award and exemplifies the very best of public leadership. As mayor, he has championed investments in public safety, streets, sidewalks, parks, housing, economic development, and the city employees who serve the community each day.
His commitment also extends beyond Bedford through leadership on local and regional boards advancing workforce development, economic growth and collaboration among Indiana communities.
May added that throughout every role he has held, Mayor Craig has led with integrity, humility, and respect, earning the trust of colleagues and citizens alike.
