South ends BNL streak with semifinal victory

MOORESVILLE – Bloomington South ended Bedford North Lawrence’s winning streak with an 11-0 triumph during the Class 3A girls soccer sectional semifinal on Wednesday night.

The Panthers (10-5-3) advanced to the final to face Mooresville (6-9-2) after the Pioneers clipped Terre Haute North 2-1 in the first semifinal.

The Stars bowed out at 11-5-1 after falling for the first time in 12 games. South recorded its fifth straight shutout.

South stormed to a 10-0 lead at halftime and capped the mercy-rule victory with a second-half goal.

“We got caught in our heels fairly quickly,” BNL coach Jordan Himmelspach said. “A few minor errors lead to major opportunities for Bloomington South. They play a very technically sound system, relying heavily on one-two combinations that left our defense caught between spaces. We made some good adjustments at halftime and played a better second half.

“The good the bad and the ugly: We had a phenomenal season and have every right to hold our heads high. I’m beyond pleased with the players and their commitment to this program. We lost and it hurts. We felt like we should have performed better in this game. South is consistently a dominant team in the state, and for my players to witness the play first hand is a great learning experience. They can now see how simple things done extremely well builds a strong team.”
