Purdue ranks as nation’s fourth most innovative public university, strengthens position as top 10 engineering school

WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue University earned record gains and standings across several core undergraduate disciplines in U.S. News & World Report’s 2027 Best Colleges rankings released Sept. 22, 2026.

The university secured the No. 8 spot nationally for undergraduate engineering, placing five individual specialties within the top five nationwide. Purdue also maintained its place among elite institutions in innovation, ranking No. 4 among public universities and No. 8 overall in the Most Innovative Schools category.

Rising Programs and STEM Excellence

Purdue posted notable year-over-year gains in several rapidly evolving academic fields, including agricultural and biological engineering (No. 2), mechanical engineering (No. 4), materials engineering (No. 7), business analytics (No. 8), quantitative analysis (No. 10), computer science (No. 14), and artificial intelligence (No. 16).

The university’s broad STEM disciplines span top 10 national spots across agriculture, business, engineering, and science:

  • Industrial Engineering: No. 2
  • Aeronautics & Astronautics: No. 3
  • Civil Engineering: No. 4
  • Production/Operations Management: No. 5
  • Cybersecurity: No. 6
  • Computer Engineering: No. 9
  • Software Engineering: No. 9
  • Supply Chain Management/Logistics: No. 9
  • Electrical Engineering: No. 10

Experiential Learning Drives Student Success

Purdue’s emphasis on hands-on practical experience was reflected in record-setting marks for student experience. The university achieved a record No. 6 national ranking for its co-ops and internships, along with a record No. 9 ranking for its learning communities.

The 2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges evaluation reviewed 1,700 colleges and universities using up to 17 metrics of academic quality. Factors assessed included retention rates, graduation rates, earnings per major, and postgraduate graduate earnings to help prospective students and families compare undergraduate offerings.

Serving more than 111,000 students across multiple campuses—including over 57,000 at its main campuses in West Lafayette and Indianapolis—Purdue has frozen main-campus tuition for 14 consecutive years to support debt-free graduation pathways.
