Seymour rolls to sectional final with win over BNL

BNL’s Laedon Jones and the Stars bowed out of the IHSAA sectional with a loss to Seymour.

BEDFORD – Seymour rolled to the IHSAA sectional final with a 5-0 sweep of Bedford North Lawrence during boys high school tennis action on Wednesday.

The Owls (18-2 and ranked No.25 in the state poll) will chase their fifth straight championship when they meet Brownstown in the final on Thursday.

Seymour dropped only eight games on the five courts while duplicating a regular-season victory over the Stars on Sept. 3. BNL finished the campaign with an 8-11 record.

”It’s sad that this is how our season has come to an end,” BNL coach Ian Dillman said. “You always want that ‘one more day to play.’ It just wasn’t ours to have today.”

Seymour’s Carter Stein stopped Laedon Jones 6-1, 6-0 at No.1 singles, Dane Thompson conquered Aden Ralston 6-0, 6-0 at No.2, and Cash Stein defeated Levi Thompson 6-2, 6-0 at No.3.

”We played great,” Dillman said. “I saw Levi and Aden both taking it to their guys on their courts, both of them hitting deep, heavy balls into the court and winning points off of it. Laedon was playing well. He was sliding all over the place, getting to balls that I thought he wasn’t able to, and keeping the point alive.”

In doubles, David Lemming and Braylon Busby displayed net wizardry while topping Jackson Corey and Asher Thompson 6-2, 6-0 at No.1. Max Payne and Gus Henry handled Trey Kiser and Riley Pruett 6-2, 6-1 at No.2.

“Both played really well,” Dillman said. “We were hesitant on a few points, and it cost us in the long run. Both Jackson and Asher had good points at the net themselves. I saw one overhead Jackson hit with such aggression that the ball went down two courts and over the fence.

”To sum up tonight, I think we played an amazing match for it being our third one in a row this week, with no days off. We still struck the ball with precision and accuracy, and took it to our opponents. It was a good way to end things this year and I’m happy with the way my team performed on the courts. We’ve got some things we have to take care of in this offseason, and my guys are already asking about when conditioning starts. I love that.”

Brownstown advanced to the final with a 4-1 win over Trinity Lutheran.
