Curtis Wayne Gaither, 86, of Bedford, passed away on Monday, September 21, 2026, at Hearthstone Health Campus in Bloomington.
Born January 29, 1940, in Hammond, Indiana, he was the son of Curtis B. and Pauline (Green) Gaither. He married Neva Fish on December 23, 1961, and she survives. He was a member of Mitchell and Central Church of Christ, a great bible school teacher, former president of the Red Cross, and a former board member of Spring Mill Bible Camp.
He is survived by his wife, Neva, of Bedford; two children, Brad (Amie) Gaither of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Scott (Elizabeth) Gaither of Bedford; six grandchildren, Emma Gaither, Will (Anna) Gaither, Sarah (David) Deniston, Thomas Gaither, Sophia Gaither, Samantha Gaither; one great-grandchild, Oliver Gaither; three sisters, Bonnie Harville, Paula Gaither, Terri Hodges; brother-in-law, Mark Fish. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Stephen Gaither, and grandson Evan Gaither.
Wayne had a deep love and appreciation for nature. He enjoyed fishing and bird hunting, but some of his happiest moments were spent right in his own yard. He could even get hummingbirds and frogs to eat from his hand.
Wayne also had a fascination with the weather. He loved watching it, talking about it, and keeping up with what was happening in the skies. He made sure his family and friends stayed informed about the weather where they lived and wherever they might be traveling. If there was a storm coming, a cold front moving in, or simply an interesting change in the forecast, Wayne probably knew about it—and was ready to tell you all about it.
Wayne loved people. He never met a stranger. He had a natural gift for making people feel comfortable and welcome with a joke, a story, or a few words of conversation. His love of nature, his stories, his humor, and especially his ability to connect with people will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Above anything else, Wayne had a heart for the Lord. He trusted the Lord with a steadfast faith. He had such a peace through his entire life, through joy and suffering, that he knew came only from God. His greatest joy was seeing people come to know the Lord.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, September 25th, at Day & Carter Mortuary, with Brother Rick Leach, Bill Bardon, and Marc Fields officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 24th, and from 10:00 am until the time of service on Friday, at Day & Carter Mortuary.
