Greencastle tops BNL in rain-shortened Edgewood Invitational

BNL’s Jackson Corey combined with Asher Thompson to win the first set at No.1 doubles before rain washed out the remainder of the matches at Edgewood on Saturday.

ELLETTSVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence dropped a 3-0 decision to Greencastle in the rain-shortened Edgewood Invitational during boy high school tennis action on Saturday.

The Stars and Tiger Cubs finished only three matches before rain washed out the remainder of that match, and forced the cancellation of the second round in an event that also included Edgewood and Owen Valley.

Greencastle took the top two singles. Gavin Tyson topped Laedon Jones 6-0, 6-0 at No.1, while Griffin Beasley conquered Aden Ralston 6-0, 6-0 at No.2. The Cubs also claimed No.2 doubles as Jonah Horvath and Harvey Cummings stopped Riley Pruett and Cruz Gomez 6-1, 6-0.

BNL owned a lead at No.1 doubles, with Jackson Corey and Asher Thompson taking the first set, before the rain descended.

”The rain, quite literally, had the last word,” BNL coach Ian Dillman said. ”Saturdays are just not our day.

“Our singles had some great points against their opponents in their second set, but just weren’t able to string anything together to get the momentum rolling. We often found ourselves hitting too short of a shot and then getting crushed when the opponent came up to the net. We found some success when we were able to shorten the points and close in at the net. That’s what I loved to see, hitting that ball out in front with your weight going into your shot.

“Overall, I’m happy with today. It’s not the result I wanted, but this helps me know what we need to work on to get ready for the next match. Our singles are working out the kinks, we have to stay determined and keep fighting for every point. Nothing’s going to be handed to us, we’ve got to work for it.“

BNL (5-5) will visit Paoli on Monday.
