BLOOMINGTON — Detectives with the Bloomington Police Department are investigating an early-morning shooting in downtown Bloomington that left a 19-year-old man hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
Emergency dispatchers received multiple 911 calls at approximately 1:07 a.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2026, reporting gunshots fired in the 300 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, near the Indiana University campus.
Responding officers located the primary scene of the shooting along the sidewalk near the southwest corner of the Monroe County Public Library.
While searching the area, officers discovered blood and personal belongings on the sidewalk, as well as bullet damage to the exterior brick facade of the Old National Bank branch directly across the street. However, no victims were present at the scene when law enforcement arrived.
A short time after officers secured the scene, authorities were notified that a 19-year-old male had arrived via private vehicle at IU Health Bloomington Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds to his neck and shoulder.
Investigators responded to the hospital to interview the victim, but the man refused to cooperate or provide information regarding the incident or the identity of the shooter. Medical staff report the victim is currently in stable condition.
Altercation Preceded Gunfire; Suspect Fled Scene
According to interviews with several witnesses near the intersection of East Kirkwood Avenue and North Lincoln Street, an argument broke out between two males on the sidewalk. During the altercation, one male drew a handgun and pointed it at the other before firing a single shot.
As bystanders fled the area, the suspect got into a nearby vehicle, reported in safety alerts as a blue or gray sedan—and fled the scene before police arrived.
Ongoing Investigation and Call for Public Assistance
The Bloomington Police Department states that no suspects have been identified and the investigation remains active.
