INDIANA — The National Weather Service has extended a Heat Advisory for central and statewide portions of Indiana through 8 p.m. Friday, warning residents that dangerous summer heat and high humidity will persist into the end of the week.
Forecasters warn that peak heat index values—a measure combining air temperature and humidity to reflect how hot it feels—could climb between 100 and 109 degrees during the peak afternoon and early evening hours.

While isolated thunderstorms are possible across parts of the region over the next few days, meteorologists caution that any brief precipitation will not bring meaningful relief from the stifling heat. High humidity levels will remain locked in place even if spotty showers develop.
Health and weather officials urge anyone spending time outdoors to take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. Recommended safety measures include:
- Staying Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, avoiding alcohol and caffeine.
- Limiting Exposure: Take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments, particularly during peak afternoon temperatures.
- Checking Vulnerable Groups: Monitor children, older adults, pets, and those working outdoors, as they face the highest risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Never Leave Children or Pets Unattended: Double-check vehicles, as interior cabin temperatures can reach lethal levels within minutes.
