BEDFORD — A 34-year-old Bedford man was arrested late Tuesday night after allegedly causing a domestic disturbance, receiving a police warning to sleep it off, and then riding an unlit bicycle while intoxicated near a dark highway intersection.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Christian James, deputies responded around 10:38 p.m. on August 25, 2026, to a domestic disturbance in the 120 block of Guthrie Road. Callers reported that Allen D. Hobbs had struck his mother and pushed her down.
Upon arrival, Sgt. James, along with Officers Paschall and McKinley, detained Hobbs on the front porch. Officers noted that Hobbs had small cuts and dried blood on his hand after breaking a glass porch table. Family members reported that Hobbs had been drinking, making suicidal statements, and had pushed his mother while she attempted to restrain him. The mother declined to file charges or seek medical treatment, and EMS evaluated Hobbs at the scene.
After receiving a disorderly conduct warning, Hobbs was released from restraints and instructed to go inside and sleep for the night.
Shortly after leaving the residence, deputies stationed in the parking lot of Johnny’s Junction at 385 Hillcrest Way observed Hobbs walking down Old State Road 37 pushing a black bicycle. Officers watched as Hobbs struggled to operate an air pump, fell head-first over his bicycle, and eventually fell off the bike near a patrol car.
Hobbs then attempted to ride the bicycle west toward the dark, unlit intersection of State Road 37 and Old State Road 37 North. Officers noted he was wearing all black clothing on a black bicycle without lights or reflective gear.
Sgt. James initiated a stop, at which point Hobbs dropped to his knees and placed his hands behind his back. After failing to provide adequate breath samples for a field breathalyzer, Hobbs was taken to the Lawrence County Jail, where a correction officer administered a test resulting in a blood alcohol concentration of 0.255%. He was subsequently transported to IU Health Bedford for medical clearance.
Hobbs was booked into the Lawrence County Jail on preliminary charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct, both Class B misdemeanors.
