BEDFORD — An ongoing family dispute over a vehicle purchase spilled into a local gas station parking lot last week, culminating in a battery charge against a 38-year-old Bedford woman after security footage captured her throwing a punch through a car window.
Bedford Police Officer Stuart Ratcliff filed a probable cause affidavit requesting an arrest warrant for Samantha Arthur on a charge of battery. She was detained on August 22.
The incident unfolded late Thursday afternoon, August 13th, when dispatchers received a third-party report of a physical fight in progress at Revere’s Food & Fuel in Bedford. Witnesses reported that a confrontation was taking place between occupants of a gray pickup truck and a white sedan.
By the time officers reached the gas station, both vehicles had already cleared the scene. However, the male driver of the white sedan later approached a Bedford Police officer to report what had happened and request formal criminal charges.
According to police records, the male had pulled into the station to drop off passengers when his aunt, Samantha Arthur, and her husband pulled up next to his vehicle. He told investigators that he and the male had been locked in a dispute regarding an unprovided vehicle title.
The male victim alleged that the male first approached his window, yelling and attempting to provoke a fight. After the male victim backed up his car to leave, the male and Samantha Arthur allegedly continued shouting at him from across the vehicle. During the exchange, Arthur called him names, stepped out of her truck, and struck him in the face with a closed fist through his open driver’s side window before relatives stepped in to separate them.
Four separate witnesses, including station employees and bystanders who intervened to de-escalate the situation, corroborated the account, telling police they saw Samantha walk up to the car and punch the driver through his window.
On Monday, Aug. 17, store management provided Bedford Police officers with security camera footage. Investigators noted that the video matched witness statements. The footage shows the male and Samantha Arthur pulling into the lot and confronting the male victim inside his vehicle.
After a brief lull, Samantha Arthur steps out of her truck and walks over to the driver’s side of the sedan.
As the male victim begins to pull away, Samantha Arthur can be seen making a distinct striking motion with her right hand through the open window area.
The male victim stops abruptly and steps out before family members intercede to prevent further violence, leading both parties to leave the lot.
Officer Ratcliff noted in court documents that he attempted to contact the male and Samantha Arthur by phone to obtain their statement regarding the incident, but messages left for the couple went unreturned.
