Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith’s Faith-Based Institutions Initiative team finds hope in community after devastating floods

CONNERSVILLE – Team Rubicon’s disaster-response volunteers are on the ground in Fayette County this week assisting with recovery efforts after devastating August floods swept through communities across central Indiana.

As Hoosiers work to recover, House of Ruth is finding ways to support the men and women of Team Rubicon while its community heals. House of Ruth, a faith-based women’s residential recovery facility in Connersville, is providing meals and washing clothing for volunteers working in the area.

“I saw the devastation firsthand in Laurel, Indiana, and prayed with families carrying the weight of what this catastrophe has taken from them,” Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith said. “House of Ruth saw a need and found a way to serve the men and women helping their community recover. That is faith in action when it matters most.”

The Faith-Based Institutions Initiative team saw this work in action while visiting faith-based organizations and nonprofits across Indiana as part of its ongoing effort to connect them with resources and share successful approaches with organizations facing similar challenges.

The initiative works to bridge the gap between government and faith-based and nonprofit organizations, which are often uniquely positioned to understand local needs and respond quickly, directly, and effectively.

“Places like House of Ruth are cornerstones of Hoosier communities,” Initiative Director Tyson Priest said. “When their neighbors needed help, they didn’t wait to be asked. They saw what was needed and found a way to serve.”

House of Ruth is seeking donations to help cover the cost of laundry tokens used to wash Team Rubicon volunteers’ clothing. Those interested in helping should contact Meagan Marshall at mncooksey88@gmail.com.

Team Rubicon is a veteran-led humanitarian organization that mobilizes trained volunteers to help communities recover from disasters.

House of Ruth is one of many faith-based organizations across Indiana that have stepped outside their everyday missions to help flood victims, support recovery volunteers, and care for communities affected by the August storms.
