LAWRENCE COUNTY — Local law enforcement agencies across Bedford, Mitchell, and Lawrence County are increasing patrols and visibility ahead of the upcoming Labor Day holiday to crack down on impaired driving.

Partnering with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, officers will conduct extra patrols and sobriety checkpoints from Wednesday, August 19, through Monday, September 7. The initiative aims to detect and apprehend drivers operating vehicles under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Police urge motorists to keep safety at the forefront during late-summer celebrations by following key precautions:
- Plan Ahead: Designate a sober driver, utilize a rideshare service, or arrange public transportation before attending gatherings where alcohol will be present.
- Intervene: Never let friends or family members drive if they have been consuming alcohol or drugs.
- Buckle Up: Always wear a seatbelt, which serves as the best line of defense against impaired drivers on the road.
Community members who spot a suspected impaired driver on local roads are instructed to pull over safely and call 911 immediately.
