Illinois woman arrested after fleeing traffic stop in I-64 construction zone

FLOYD COUNTY An Illinois woman is facing multiple charges, including a felony, after allegedly speeding through an Interstate 64 construction zone, fleeing a traffic stop, and resisting arrest on Friday afternoon.

According to authorities, the incident began on August 14 at approximately 3:00 p.m. when Trooper Brandon Love observed a vehicle traveling 83 mph in a posted 55 mph construction zone near the 119-mile marker on eastbound I-64.

During the ensuing traffic stop, Trooper Love determined that the driver, later identified as 36-year-old Leanna Accardi of Granite City, Illinois, was operating the vehicle with a suspended license. Accardi also allegedly failed to provide proof of insurance. As the trooper returned to his patrol car to continue processing the investigation, Accardi accelerated and fled the scene.

A brief pursuit followed. Near the 121-mile marker, approximately two miles west of the Sherman Minton Bridge, Trooper Love executed a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver, successfully disabling the fleeing vehicle.

After the car was brought to a halt, authorities say Accardi actively resisted arrest. Trooper Love deployed his department-issued Taser to de-escalate the situation, which allowed troopers to safely take her into custody without further incident.

Accardi was transported to Baptist Floyd Hospital, where she was medically cleared before being booked into the Floyd County Jail.

She is currently facing the following preliminary charges:

  • Resisting law enforcement with a vehicle (Level 6 felony)
  • Resisting law enforcement (Class A misdemeanor)
  • Repeat insurance violator (Class B misdemeanor)
  • Reckless driving causing damage (Class B misdemeanor)
