DELAWARE COUNTY – The Indiana State Police is investigating a police action shooting that occurred Sunday evening in Daleville involving officers from multiple agencies.
On Sunday, August 9, 2026, at approximately 6:00 p.m., officers from the Daleville Police Department, deputies from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, and an officer with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources responded to the 8400 block of South Lynn Street in Daleville following reports of shots being fired from a residence.
Upon arrival, officers encountered an armed individual, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between the individual and multiple law enforcement officers. Neither the individual nor any of the officers involved were struck by gunfire.
Following the exchange of gunfire, the individual barricaded himself inside the residence. The Delaware County SWAT Team and members of the Indiana State Police SWAT Team responded to assist with the incident and efforts to resolve the situation peacefully.
Members of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department Crisis Negotiation Team established telephone contact with the individual and maintained communication with him for several hours. Despite repeated efforts and commands to surrender peacefully, the individual refused to exit the residence.
Shortly after 4:30 a.m. Monday, members of the Delaware County SWAT Team entered the residence and took the individual into custody without further incident.
The individual was transported to Ball Memorial Hospital for a medical evaluation and is expected to be transported to the Delaware County Jail following his release from the hospital.
The Indiana State Police is investigating the circumstances surrounding the police action shooting. Upon completion of the investigation, the findings will be submitted to the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
The Indiana State Police was assisted at the scene by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, Daleville Police Department, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Delaware County SWAT Team, Indiana State Police SWAT Team, Delaware County EMS, and Daleville Fire Department.
The investigation remains ongoing. No additional information will be released at this time.
