WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue University is set to name Rice University Athletic Director Tommy McClelland as its next vice president and director of Intercollegiate Athletics. The move, initially reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, brings a seasoned executive with nearly two decades of athletic administration experience to lead the Boilermakers.
McClelland, 44, will become just the fifth person to hold the athletic director position full-time at Purdue since 1942. The university announced he will be officially introduced during a press conference on Thursday at 11 a.m. ET.
A Career Built on Rapid Advancement
A native of Basile, Louisiana, McClelland attended Northwestern State University, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport administration while competing as a walk-on long snapper in football and a javelin thrower in track and field.
His administrative ascent in college athletics began early:
- McNeese State (2007–2013): Named athletic director at just 26 years old, becoming one of the youngest Division I athletic directors in NCAA history.
- Louisiana Tech (2013–2020): Spearheaded major facility expansions, including the $23 million Davison Athletics Complex and an $18 million press box and luxury suite project at Joe Aillet Stadium.
- Vanderbilt (2020–2023): Served as deputy athletic director, overseeing football operations, ticket revenue, broadcasting partnerships, and major fundraising campaigns.
- Rice University (2023–2026): Took over as vice president and athletic director, launching innovative revenue-generation strategies and creating direct NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) support avenues such as the South Main Fund.
Succeeding Mike Bobinski
McClelland takes the helm from outgoing Athletic Director Mike Bobinski, who announced in June his intent to step down on December 31 after a decade leading the program.
During Bobinski’s tenure, which began in 2016, Purdue Athletics experienced unprecedented athletic success—highlighted by men’s basketball reaching the 2024 NCAA National Championship game—alongside record-setting academic achievement and major upgrades to venues like Ross-Ade Stadium and Mackey Arena. Bobinski will remain with the department through the end of the year to ensure a smooth transition.

McClelland arrives in West Lafayette during a transformative era for college athletics. As the Big Ten Conference continues its expansion and schools adapt to direct revenue sharing, evolving NIL rules, and mounting financial requirements, Purdue targeted an administrator with a proven track record in fundraising and modern athletic management.
His background in building NIL operational frameworks and securing private donations at Rice and Louisiana Tech aligns closely with the modern demands facing Big Ten athletic departments.
