DECATUR COUNTY — A two-vehicle collision on U.S. 421 left two drivers dead and an 18-year-old passenger critically injured Friday morning, according to local authorities.
Deputies with the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched at approximately 6:00 a.m. to the 5000 block of North U.S. 421 following reports of a severe head-on crash. Initial investigations indicate that a northbound vehicle crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming southbound vehicle.
The impact trapped both drivers and a passenger inside the wreckage, requiring emergency crews to perform mechanical extrications.
The Decatur County Coroner’s Office pronounced both drivers dead at the scene. Jason P. Hall, 41, of Marion was driving northbound, and Douglas G. Ott, 56, of Shelbyville was driving southbound.
The passenger in the southbound vehicle, James A. Ott, 18, also of Shelbyville, sustained severe injuries. He was stabilized at the scene before being airlifted by medical helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital for emergency care.
U.S. 421 was closed to traffic for approximately four hours while crash reconstructionists surveyed the site and crews cleared the roadway.
The cause of the crash remains under active investigation by the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including StatFlight and Indiana University Health LifeLine medical helicopters, Letts Volunteer Fire Department and EMS, Decatur County EMS, Greensburg Fire Department, Adams Volunteer Fire Department, the Indiana State Police, and Platinum Wrecker Service.
