WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick announced $5 million in new funding to advance quantum computing research and manufacturing in Indiana. The Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration is awarding the funding through its Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs Program, recognizing the growing prominence of the Indiana-Illinois-Wisconsin quantum technology ecosystem.

Sen. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) said, “The race for quantum technology is a race America must win. This investment will strengthen Indiana’s leadership in advanced manufacturing, support high-tech jobs, and help ensure the next generation of critical technologies is built here.”

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick added, “The Trump Administration’s continued investments in quantum technology are leading the world into a new era of American innovation. This award will position the Midwest as a global leader in quantum technology and strengthen U.S. production of quantum materials, components, and subsystems.”

The funding is part of the Commerce Department’s broader effort to position the United States as the global leader in critical technologies by accelerating commercialization, expanding domestic manufacturing capacity, and strengthening supply chains essential to America’s economic and national security.
As a part of today’s announcement:
- Purdue Northwest will receive $500,000 to boost its Roberts Impact Lab’s work commercializing quantum technologies.
- Additionally, $4.5 million will be available for sub-awards to small Indiana manufacturers in the quantum computing industry to increase their production capabilities.
Indiana’s investment is a part of the Bloch Quantum Tech Hub, a regional partnership spanning Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin that aims to make the Midwest the global leader in quantum technology by scaling up U.S. production of quantum materials, components, and advanced manufacturing capabilities. The initiative leverages the region’s world-class research institutions, manufacturing base, and workforce to move quantum breakthroughs from the laboratory to the factory floor. Indiana is also home to the Quantum Corridor, which will be the fastest and most secure computing network from Hammond to Naval Weapons Station Crane. Quantum computing technology harnesses advanced physics principles to solve complex problems that traditional computers cannot handle.
