BEDFORD — A Paragon man was arrested Thursday morning after police say he refused to leave IU Health Bedford property and later resisted arrest.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Indiana University Health Department of Public Safety Police Officer James T. Harrington, Mark Lee Williams, 52, was arrested on preliminary charges of criminal trespass and resisting law enforcement.
Harrington reported he was working at IU Health Bedford in the 2900 block of West 16th Street shortly after midnight Thursday when hospital staff contacted him about Williams being at the facility looking for someone.
According to the affidavit, Harrington spoke with Williams and told him the person he was looking for was not at the hospital and that he needed to leave the property. Harrington said Williams left the hospital, and officers later learned the individual Williams was seeking did not want him to have access to her medical information or visit her at the hospital.
The affidavit states that Harrington later located Williams sitting in a red Ford Explorer in the hospital parking lot with the engine running. Harrington reported he approached Williams, instructed him to turn off the vehicle and exit, and then attempted to place him under arrest.
According to the affidavit, Williams allegedly pulled away from Harrington several times while the officer attempted to handcuff him and reached toward his waistband. Harrington reported he was able to secure Williams in handcuffs after taking him to the ground.
A pocketknife was located in Williams’ pocket during a search following the arrest, according to the affidavit.
Williams was taken to the emergency department for medical clearance before being transported to the Lawrence County Security Center. The affidavit states Williams was medically cleared and later transferred into the custody of Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office corrections officers.
