MITCHELL — A Campbellsburg man was arrested July 9 after police say he returned to a property after being told to leave and was later found to be operating a vehicle while allegedly impaired.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Mitchell Police Officer Phillip Emery, Rajiv Avanigadda, 24, was arrested on preliminary charges of criminal trespass and OWI, a Class A misdemeanor.
Emery reported he was dispatched at about 7:49 p.m. July 9 to a domestic verbal dispute in the 800 block of West Main Street in Mitchell. Officers J. McMillen and G. Jacobs of the Mitchell Police Department assisted at the scene.
According to the affidavit, officers spoke with Avanigadda and another individual separately. Police were told Avanigadda had entered a library where the individual worked and allegedly harassed her and another employee.
The affidavit states that employees told Avanigadda multiple times to leave the library, but he did not comply. Police then issued a trespass warning, and Avanigadda left the property on foot.
Shortly afterward, police said Avanigadda returned to the library property. Officers spoke with him and advised him he could use the vehicle he had permission to drive, but he was not permitted to take it back to the library.
According to the affidavit, Avanigadda left the parking lot in the vehicle but later returned and parked at the library. Emery reported he approached the vehicle, ordered Avanigadda to exit, and detected the odor of alcohol.
Police placed Avanigadda in restraints and conducted a search, locating two lighters and sunglasses, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit states Avanigadda initially refused a preliminary breath test but later submitted to testing at the Lawrence County Jail, where police reported a result above 0.200. He was then transported to IU Health Bedford for medical clearance and later returned to the jail.
Avanigadda was booked into the Lawrence County Jail.
Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
