BEDFORD — A Bedford man was arrested Thursday evening after allegedly fleeing from police in a vehicle and on foot before resisting officers as they attempted to take him into custody.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Bedford Police Officer Joshua Turner, Cody Stannard, 26, was arrested on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement by fleeing in a motor vehicle, resisting law enforcement by fleeing on foot, resisting law enforcement by force, possession of a hypodermic needle, and possession of paraphernalia.
Police said Turner was patrolling an alley near the 1000 block of 16th Street at about 6:42 p.m. Thursday when he recognized Stannard, who was driving a maroon Ford F-250. Turner reported knowing Stannard had an active Lawrence County warrant and activated his emergency lights before ordering him to exit the vehicle.
According to the affidavit, Stannard ignored repeated commands and maneuvered the truck before exiting through the passenger side and running into a business in the 1000 block of 16th Street.
Turner and Sgt. Crulo pursued Stannard into the building before he allegedly continued running on foot. Police said Stannard was located near another business on the same block, where officers attempted to take him into custody.
The affidavit alleges Stannard resisted arrest by pulling his arms away from officers before he was eventually handcuffed. He was transported to IU Health Bedford for medical clearance, where police said he refused treatment, and was then taken to the Lawrence County Jail.
During an inventory of the truck before it was towed, officers reported finding a zippered case containing a hypodermic needle with a clear liquid and a smoking device with a powdery residue. The items were collected as evidence.
Stannard was incarcerated in the Lawrence County Jail.
