BLOOMINGTON— A suspect wanted in connection with a June shooting that targeted an SUV occupied by seven people—including four young children—has been taken into custody in Indianapolis, authorities announced.

Kafern P. Johnson, 33, was located and arrested without incident on Wednesday, July 8, by members of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) SWAT Team near the intersection of West 84th Street and Allison Avenue.
The charges stem from an incident reported at approximately 7:41 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. Monroe County Central Emergency Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired in the 1000 block of North Summit Street, near West 13th Street and Crestmont Park.
Responding officers from the Bloomington Police Department determined that a verbal argument had broken out between Johnson and the driver of a white GMC SUV regarding a mutual relationship with a female. During the altercation, Johnson allegedly drew a handgun and fired seven to eight rounds directly into the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
At the time of the gunfire, the SUV contained three adults and four children. Miraculously, no injuries were reported.
Investigation and Arrest
Detectives launched a multi-week search to track down Johnson following the shooting. On Wednesday afternoon, IMPD officers located Johnson in Indianapolis and took him into custody.
Following an interview attempt at IMPD headquarters, Johnson was remanded to the Marion County Jail. He faces the following felony charges:
- Attempted murder, a Level 1 felony
- Criminal recklessness with a firearm, a Level 5 felony
- Pointing a firearm, a Level 6 felony
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent until proven guilty through a fair and due legal process. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
