BLOOMINGTON — Local authorities are investigating a brutal weekend assault that left a vulnerable member of the community hospitalized with severe injuries.
First responders were called to a local business awning early Sunday morning after receiving reports of an injured person. Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered a 53-year-old homeless man suffering from significant trauma to his head and torso.
According to community advocates and preliminary reports, the victim had sought temporary refuge under the shelter to escape the torrential downpours and high winds that swept through Monroe County on Saturday night. Witnesses report that a group of unidentified individuals approached the man’s makeshift shelter space, escalating a brief verbal exchange into a violent physical altercation.
The victim, whose name is being withheld pending family notification, was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable but serious condition.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed it is actively reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses to identify the suspects. Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed unusual activity in the area between midnight and 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning to contact the investigators.
