Bedford City Utilities continues fire hydrant flushing

BEDFORD Bedford City Utilities is continuing its bi-annual fire hydrant flushing program across the city’s water infrastructure.

The maintenance process helps maintain high water quality and ensures proper fire-flow capabilities throughout the municipal pipe network. Because the program’s initial dates (July 5 and July 6) have already passed, city officials have released the remaining tentative schedule for local neighborhoods and major health facilities.

Remaining Hydrant Flushing Schedule

Municipal crews will continue work over the next week and a half, according to the following neighborhood breakdown:

  • Tuesday Night & Wednesday Night (July 7–8): 16th Street west of M Street, Edgewood Addition, IU Health Bedford, Bex Addition, and Westview Manor.
  • Thursday Night & Sunday Night (July 9 & July 12): East of Mitchell Road/south of 16th Street, including Brook Knoll, Glen Meadows, Shandell Drive, and Core Nursing Home.
  • Monday Night & Tuesday Night (July 13–14): John Williams Boulevard, all of Lincoln Avenue, 15th & M west, and the area spanning from 8th Street south to 16th Street.
  • Wednesday Night & Thursday Night (July 15–16): East of Lincoln Avenue and north of 15th Street.

Weather and Service Disruptions: The hydrant flushing schedule remains strictly tentative and is subject to sudden changes or cancellations if crews encounter severe or inclement weather.

Customer Safety and Water Advice

During active flushing operations in their respective zones, utility customers may temporarily experience fluctuations in household water pressure and localized discoloration of their tap water.

If the water in your home or business appears cloudy or discolored, Bedford City Utilities advises running your cold water tap continuously for several minutes until the flow runs completely clear. To protect appliances and clothing, residents are strongly recommended to postpone doing laundry and heavily limit their usage of hot water systems until the cold water lines clear out entirely.
