WEST LAFAYETTE — Former Purdue University President Mitch Daniels has officially returned to the helm of the institution, stepping into the role of interim president effective July 1. His return follows the sudden departure of President Mung Chiang.
To mark the beginning of this transition period, Daniels released a video message addressing students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
In the video, Daniels expresses his deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve the university once again. He takes time to reflect on Purdue’s current institutional momentum and recent accomplishments, while outlining the university’s strategic focus as the Board of Trustees begins the formal search for its next permanent leader.
Alongside the video, Daniels shared the following written note of appreciation with the campus community:
“While the sudden need for an interim president came as a surprise to us all, the friendly encouragement I’ve received from across the Purdue community convinces me we can move through this interval without any loss of momentum. Please accept this video as my thanks for all the gracious messages I’ve received, and Boiler Up!”
University officials emphasized that despite the unexpected change in leadership, the transition will not stall the institution’s ongoing initiatives. As the presidential search committee gets underway, Purdue University remains fully committed to its educational mission, its community, and its persistent pursuit of the “next giant leap.”
