SCOTT COUNTY— A violent road rage dispute on Interstate 65 in southern Indiana left one driver fighting for his life and a Kentucky man facing a felony attempted murder charge.
At approximately 2:38 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 2026, emergency personnel responded to a flurry of 911 calls regarding a shooting in the northbound lanes of I-65. The incident occurred near the 27-mile marker, just a few miles south of Scottsburg.

According to reports from the Indiana State Police (ISP), the initial call was fielded by Scott County Dispatch. A rapid, coordinated response saw officers from the Scottsburg Police Department, deputies with the Scott County Sheriff’s Department, and state troopers arrive on the scene within minutes.
The preliminary investigation indicates the entire conflict stemmed from an apparent road-rage dispute that escalated rapidly while both vehicles were traveling northbound. Investigators determined that the situation peaked when the male driver of a white 2025 Mazda passenger car and the driver of a gray 2026 Ford Maverick truck pulled over and brought their vehicles to a complete stop directly in the left lane of the active highway.
Sgt. Carey Huls, a spokesperson for the Indiana State Police, noted that the confrontation turned physical after both drivers exited their respective vehicles. During the encounter, the driver of the Maverick pulled a firearm and shot the driver of the Mazda.
The shooting victim sustained severe, life-threatening injuries. He was initially treated at the scene and transported by Scott County EMS to Norton Scott Hospital in Scottsburg. Due to the critical nature of his wounds, he was later airlifted via medical helicopter to the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, for specialized trauma care. While state police have formally notified the victim’s immediate family, his identity is currently being withheld.
Authorities confirmed that all involved parties remained at the mile marker following the gunfire and surrendered to arriving officers. Because the suspect and all passengers were immediately accounted for, ISP assured regional residents that there was no active or ongoing danger to the public.
However, the emergency response and subsequent crime scene investigation severely disrupted transit. Law enforcement cordoned off a portion of northbound I-65 for hours to process ballistics evidence and document the vehicles, triggering miles-long backups and forcing commuters to seek alternate routes through Scott County.
Following an on-scene interrogation and review of the physical evidence, state detectives arrested the driver of the Maverick. The suspect has been identified as James Camden Dowdell, 28, of Shelbyville, Kentucky.

Dowdell was transported and booked into the Scott County Jail on a preliminary charge of attempted murder, which constitutes a Level 1 felony under Indiana law. If convicted, a Level 1 felony carries a sentencing advisory range of 20 to 40 years in state prison.
Indiana State Police troopers and detectives have assumed full control of the ongoing case. Criminal forensic teams are continuing to analyze the scene and piece together the exact sequence of events that led to the confrontation.
State police have requested that anyone who may have witnessed the driving behavior of the white Mazda or gray Ford Maverick before the shooting contact the ISP Sellersburg Post.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent until proven guilty through a fair and due legal process. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
