INDOT to host Public Open House on proposed State Road 56 Sidewalk Project in Ireland

IRELAND, Ind. — The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced it will host a public open house next month to discuss a proposed pedestrian safety and sidewalk infrastructure project along State Road 56 in Ireland.

The informational meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, 2026, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Due to space and accessibility, the event will be held just down the road at Saint Mary Church, located at 2829 North Ireland Road in Jasper.

The project is designed to drastically improve pedestrian accessibility and connectivity through the small Dubois County community. INDOT’s current proposal includes plans for:

  • Brand-new concrete sidewalks along designated sections of State Road 56.
  • Highly visible, painted crosswalks to ensure safer highway crossings.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant curb ramps at key intersections.

An Open-House Format for Community Voices

INDOT officials emphasized that the event will be conducted strictly in an open-house format. There will be no formal presentation or speech scheduled during the two-hour window. Instead, residents, business owners, and commuters are invited to drop in at any time to review project maps, look over preliminary engineering designs, and speak one-on-one with INDOT project managers and engineers.

Public feedback is a critical phase of the state’s project development. Community members will have the opportunity to submit written comments at the event, which will be entered into the official project record as INDOT finalizes its construction timelines and environmental impact assessments.

For those unable to attend the meeting in person, INDOT typically makes project displays and comment forms available online following the public session.
