Nara Organics issues nationwide recall of powdered infant formula following reports of infant botulism

NATIONWIDE — Nara Organics announced a voluntary, nationwide recall of all lots of its powdered infant formula currently on the market. The decision was made out of an abundance of caution due to a potential risk of Clostridium botulinum contamination, a bacterium that can cause severe and potentially fatal illness in infants.

The recall was initiated after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) contacted the company regarding three confirmed cases of infant botulism. The affected infants, located in California, Washington, and Pennsylvania, were hospitalized and treated with BabyBIG (Botulism Immune Globulin Intravenous). No deaths have been reported.

While Nara Organics infant formula has not tested positive for C. botulinum to date, the company is recalling all products in the market while cooperating with federal and state partners to investigate the root cause of the illnesses.

Affected Product Details

The recalled products were distributed nationally across Target retail stores, Target.com, and Nara.com between July 2025 and June 2026. The recall applies exclusively to products distributed within the United States and includes the following two items:

  • Nara Organics Whole Milk Infant Formula (700g) – UPC: 860013251901
  • Nara Organics Whole Milk Infant Formula (400g) – UPC: 860013251918

All lots currently on the market are included in this recall. Consumers can identify the lot code printed on the bottom of each can. The three specific lots associated with the hospitalized infants are 709125280E14F2, 709125288E14F2, and 708125174E14F2.

Health Risks and Symptoms

Infant botulism occurs when Clostridium botulinum spores are ingested, colonize an infant’s immature intestinal tract, and produce dangerous neurotoxins.

Parents and caregivers should immediately stop using the recalled formula. If an infant has consumed this product, guardians should monitor them closely and contact a healthcare provider immediately if any of the following symptoms appear:

  • Constipation
  • Poor feeding, difficulty sucking, or difficulty swallowing
  • Drooping eyelids (ptosis) or sluggish pupils
  • Low muscle tone (floppiness) or generalized weakness
  • A weak or altered cry
  • Respiratory difficulty or respiratory distress
