Target issues nationwide recall for Up & Up Baby Wipes due to dangerous bacteria contamination

NATIONWIDE — Target has launched a voluntary, nationwide recall of several configurations of its popular “Up & Up” brand baby wipes after federal regulators confirmed the presence of dangerous, potentially life-threatening bacteria in product samples.

The recall, announced in coordination with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on June 4, 2026, impacts both Fragrance Free and Fresh Cucumber Scented varieties.

The contamination was discovered after customers complained about product discoloration. Subsequent testing by the FDA confirmed the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli—bacterial strains known to cause severe infections.

Target and the product’s manufacturer, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, have already received reports of skin irritation, eye irritation, and infections potentially linked to the wipes. Those incidents remain under investigation.

While these bacteria pose a risk to anyone, they are exceptionally dangerous to the primary users of the product. Infants, newborns, young children, and individuals with compromised immune systems are at the highest risk for severe complications.

Because minor skin abrasions and diaper rashes are commonplace during diaper changes, the bacteria can easily enter the body. From there, it can spread into the bloodstream, potentially causing life-threatening sepsis or severe pneumonia.

The recall covers eight specific product configurations sold at Target stores nationwide and online via Target.com. Parents and caregivers should check the UPC, manufacturing codes, and expiration dates printed directly on the packaging:
