BNL finishes 12th in Unified state meet

INDIANAPOLIS – Bedford North Lawrence finished 12th in the state finals during Unified track action on Saturday at North Central.

The Stars scored 53 points. Penn won the state crown in the 12-team field with 129 points.

“I am proud of the kids, even though we did not have the day we wanted,” BNL coach Mike Branam said. “We were missing some key athletes from the team, which hurt us scoring wise. We are also a young team, so nerves came into play, as did some of our motivation. We let the stage control our thoughts and emotions and when you are a young team, it hurts you mentally, destroys your focus, and it hurts the team’s cohesiveness.

“I want to congratulate Ellie Matheny and Jaxon Donnell for making All-state honorable mention and All-state respectively. Ellie ran a personal best in the 100 to claim her honorable mention. The girls 400 relay also ran a season best, as did Rex Evans in the 400-meter dash.

”Even though the season didn’t end the way we hoped, there is no better final meet for a season or a career. We didn’t receive a crown, but at least we were invited to the ball.”
