BEDFORD — A Bedford man who was ordered to leave a local hotel Wednesday afternoon was arrested less than an hour later after police found him heavily intoxicated and standing in the middle of a busy intersection.

Nithiyananthan Ganesan, 40, of Bedford, was taken into custody on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. He faces preliminary charges of Criminal Trespass and Public Intoxication, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by the Bedford Police Department.
The incident began earlier that afternoon at the Quality Inn & Suites on Constitution Avenue. According to court documents, Bedford Police dayshift officers responded to the hotel and officially trespassed Ganesan from the property.
Ganesan was given a strict deadline to gather his belongings and leave the premises by 2:00 p.m. Officer Zakry Brooking noted in the report that Ganesan explicitly acknowledged the warning and stated he understood he had to be gone by the designated time.
However, at 2:51 p.m., nearly an hour past the deadline, hotel employees called Bedford Police dispatch back to the scene. Staff reported that Ganesan was still on the property, pacing aimlessly around the hotel, with none of his belongings in sight.
Apprehended in the Middle of Traffic
Bedford Police Officer Bailey Duprey arrived at the hotel and spotted Ganesan pacing in the parking lot. As the police cruiser approached, Ganesan began walking away toward the intersection of John Williams Boulevard and Constitution Avenue.
Officer Duprey noted that Ganesan exhibited unstable footing and suddenly came to a stop, standing completely still directly in the middle of the active intersection, in the path of oncoming traffic.
When Officer Duprey called out to him, Ganesan slowly walked over to the officer with his hands in his pockets. While speaking with him, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol and observed that Ganesan’s eyes were glossy and bloodshot.
When asked if he had been drinking, Ganesan admitted he had. He pointed toward the Kindred Spirits liquor store on the south side of John Williams Boulevard and stated that he “just wanted to get some beer.” Ganesan also confirmed to the officer that he remembered he was supposed to leave the hotel by 2:00 p.m. and correctly identified that it was now approximately 3:00 p.m.
Ganesan was placed into custody and transported to the Lawrence County Security Center. Upon arrival, a portable breath test was administered, which yielded a preliminary blood alcohol concentration of 0.28%, three and a half times Indiana’s legal driving limit of 0.08%.
Due to the extreme level of intoxication, jail staff could not immediately process him. Officers transported Ganesan to IU Health Bedford Hospital, where he was monitored by medical staff.
Once physicians provided an official medical clearance, Ganesan was transported back to the Lawrence County Security Center and booked into the custody of the Lawrence County Sheriff.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This article is based on the information provided in the probable cause affidavit and does not represent a final determination of guilt or innocence.
