Velpen woman killed in single-vehicle crash on State Road 57

DAVIESS COUNTY A southern Indiana woman lost her life Wednesday morning following a single-vehicle accident on State Road 57, according to local authorities.

The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they are investigating the traffic fatality, which occurred on May 27, 2026, in an area known locally as the Sandyhook Curve.

According to emergency dispatch logs, the Daviess County Central Dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 11:27 a.m. reporting that a vehicle had collided with a guardrail near County Road 575 South.

Preliminary findings from crash investigators indicate that 50-year-old Amanda John, of Velpen, Indiana, was traveling southbound on State Road 57 in a white 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe. For reasons that remain under investigation, the SUV veered off the west side of the blacktop, colliding with the guardrail, and plunged into a deep ditch where it came to rest.

Emergency medical personnel and deputies rushed to the scene, but John had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the crash site. Officials confirmed that her family has since been notified.

The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office remains the primary investigating agency as they work to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.

A large contingent of local emergency personnel responded to assist at the scene, including the Veale Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Daviess County Ambulance Service, the Daviess County Coroner’s Office, and Countryside Wrecker Service.
