Streaking Shakamak cools off BNL with 5-2 win

BNL’s Grady Dalton is greeted by coach Steven McNabb. The Stars dropped a 5-2 decision to Shakamak on Thursday as the Lakers won their ninth straight game.

BEDFORD – Shakamak, one of the hottest teams in southern Indiana, cooled off Bedford North Lawrence.

Two pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Lakers (15-5) extended their winning streak to nine straight with a 5-2 triumph over the Stars on Thursday. Shakamak hurlers Ian Samm and Jaden Johnson kept BNL’s offense in check while ending the four-game run for the Stars (11-9).

“I knew coming in this would be a tough game,” BNL coach Steven McNabb said. “Shakamak was throwing its best two guys. They are, year in and year out, competitive, and they expect to compete and win these games.

”Size of school does not mean a whole lot in baseball. It comes down to execution, and we just did not do enough tonight. We made mistakes in all three phases that did not help the cause.”

Shakamak took a 2-0 lead in the third on Madden Husband’s RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Dolton Fiscus. The Stars answered with two in the bottom of the frame on two walks, a wild pitch and Cutler Chastain’s run-scoring ground out.

The Lakers came back with the go-ahead runs in the fourth on Samm’s RBI single and a passed ball that allowed a run. Shakamak added a final run in the sixth on a bases-loaded ground out.

Samm was 3 for 3 while Husband had two hits. BNL starter Cam Gates struck out 11 in five innings.

BNL’s only hits were a Chastain single in the first, Grayson Gillespie’s single in the second, and a double by Gates in the fifth.

The Stars will host the annual Orval Huffman Invitational on Saturday, facing Northview (10 a.m.) and Vincennes Rivet (5:30 p.m.).
