FRENCH LICK – A nationally recognized Smithsonian exhibition exploring the history of voting rights and civic participation in the United States will make a stop in Orange County this spring.
“Voices and Votes: Democracy in America,” a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution, will be on display in French Lick from May 16 through June 28. Admission is free and open to the public.
The exhibit, presented in partnership with Indiana Humanities and Museum on Main Street, examines the more than 250-year story of American democracy through historical photographs, artifacts, and interactive displays. Topics include the founding of the nation, the expansion of voting rights, civic engagement, and the continuing evolution of democracy in the United States.
The exhibit will be housed at Timeless French Lick, located at 8102 Indiana 56 in West Baden Springs.
Organizers say the exhibit is designed to encourage conversations about the responsibilities of citizenship and the importance of participating in democracy. The display also highlights the voices of ordinary Americans who helped shape the nation’s political history through activism, voting rights movements, and community involvement.
Museum on Main Street, a program of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, brings exhibitions and educational resources to small-town museums, libraries, and cultural organizations across the country. Indiana Humanities is sponsoring the exhibit’s statewide tour.
Exhibit hours will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
