BEDFORD — A multi-agency search involving a K-9 unit led to the arrest of a 24-year-old Bedford man Friday afternoon after he allegedly trespassed on a Shawswick School Road property and fled into a nearby wooded area.
Jalyn D. Scales faces several charges, including residential entry and resisting law enforcement, following an incident that prompted a heightened police presence near Shawswick Elementary School while classes were in session.

The situation began around 12:46 p.m. on May 8, 2026, when a resident reported that Scales was hiding under the back porch of his home. The homeowner informed dispatchers that Scales had been formally trespassed from the property in 2023 and appeared to be “high as a kite.” Fearing Scales might be armed, the homeowner told police he had armed himself for protection.
Upon the arrival of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and Mitchell Police, Scales fled toward a barn and then into a dense wooded area north of the property. Officers established a perimeter and deployed K-9 Boone to track the suspect.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed by Captain Anthony Pope, K-9 Boone tracked Scales to a steep ravine leading to a creek. When ordered to surrender, Scales reportedly fled down the ravine and into the water. Officer Carter then deployed Boone, who apprehended Scales by the arm.
Police report that Scales was physically resistant and noncompliant, actively fighting the K-9 and pulling his arms away from officers. Captain Pope utilized a “distraction strike” to gain compliance and secure Scales in handcuffs. During the struggle, Captain Pope sustained minor injuries to his right buttock.
Following his arrest, Scales was treated by EMS for minor dog bite injuries and transported to IU Health Bedford. During his evaluation, Scales reportedly made statements indicating an intent to commit self-harm, leading to a secondary transport to IU Health Bloomington for a mental health evaluation.
While being treated, Scales was reportedly disruptive and disorderly, yelling continuously within earshot of passing motorists and the public. Officers noted he displayed consistent signs of irrational behavior and intoxication.
While Scales was being evaluated, investigators spoke with witnesses at the residence. Although the homeowner did not see Scales enter the house, a grandmother at the scene reported finding fresh grass clippings on the floor leading to an upstairs bedroom. She told officers she believed Scales had entered through an unlocked door before being discovered under the porch. The homeowner also alleged that Scales stated he was at the property “to kill them” before fleeing.
Scales was released from the hospital at approximately 5:00 p.m. and transported to the Lawrence County Jail. He has been charged with residential entry, interfering with a public safety officer, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct, and public intoxication
