INDIANA — George J. Howe Co. has announced a voluntary recall of 13,619 pounds of sunflower seeds due to the potential presence of undeclared tree nuts (cashews). The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the product may contain allergens not listed on the primary packaging.

While the product is safe for the general population, individuals with an allergy or severe sensitivity to tree nuts (cashews) face the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if the product is consumed. As of this report, no illnesses have been documented in connection with this recall.
The affected sunflower seeds were distributed across a wide geographic area, reaching 23 states including:
- Midwest: IL, IN, IA, KS, MI, MN, MO, OH, WI
- South: AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, MS, NC, OK, SC, TN, VA
- Northeast/Mid-Atlantic: MD, NJ, PA
The products were sold through various channels, including foodservice accounts, specialty retailers, and major grocery chains such as Walmart, Giant Eagle, ShopRite, Foodland, Piggly Wiggly, and Shop ‘N Save.

Note: All products currently carry a general facility warning stating: “This product was packaged in a facility that also processes peanuts, tree nuts, milk products, soy, wheat and eggs.”
Consumer Action
Customers who have purchased the recalled sunflower seeds and have a cashew allergy are urged not to consume them. The product should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
