National Weather Service confirms three tornadoes touched down in Jackson and Morgan Counties

CENTRAL INDIANA The National Weather Service (NWS) has officially confirmed that three tornadoes touched down across Jackson and Morgan counties during Monday’s severe weather outbreak. While the storms left a trail of structural damage and downed utilities, officials report that no injuries were sustained during the events.

Jackson County: EF-1 Strength Northwest of Seymour

The first confirmed tornado hit Jackson County at 4:44 p.m. Monday. Rated as an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, the storm packed peak winds of 105 mph.

The tornado traveled 2.16 miles with a maximum width of 100 yards, staying on the ground for roughly three minutes.

The twister touched down south of the County Road 300 East and County Road 875 North intersection, snapping hardwood trees before moving northeast. Significant damage was reported to barns and at least one home along CR 900 North and CR 925 North.

In addition to the tornado, NWS surveyors found evidence of 100 mph straight-line winds southeast of the track. This caused 39 utility poles to snap or lean and caused roof damage at Rose Acre Farms.

Morgan County: Dual Tornado Strikes

Morgan County, located directly southwest of Indianapolis, was hit by two separate tornadoes later that evening.

An EF-1 tornado struck South of Mooresville (EF-1) at 10:50 p.m. The tornado touched down with 105 mph winds. It traveled 2.73 miles through neighborhoods near Carol Lane and East Wilson Drive, crossing Rooker Road and Neitzel Road before dissipating.

Large softwood and hardwood trees were uprooted throughout its 150-yard-wide path.

Minutes later, at 10:54 p.m., a smaller EF-0 tornado touched down southeast of Mooresville.

This “light” tornado lasted approximately one minute, covering a quarter-mile with winds up to 85 mph.

Debris was scattered onto homes and barns along East Spring Lake Road, with further tree damage noted near Forest Grove Road.
