Traffic stop leads to drug charges for two Bedford men

BEDFORD — A routine traffic stop early Monday morning resulted in the arrest of two local men on multiple drug-related and obstruction of justice charges.

At approximately 1:22 a.m. on April 20, 2026, Bedford Police Officer Taylor Daugherty observed a white 2017 Jeep Cherokee traveling southbound on State Rd 37. The vehicle reportedly crossed the white fog line multiple times, prompting a traffic stop at the intersection of State Road 37 and John Williams Boulevard.

Teddy Eggers

Officer Daugherty identified the driver as Teddy Eggers, 56, and the front passenger as Kenneth Chenault, 27. During the encounter, the officer noted that Eggers appeared nervous, exhibiting rapid breathing and sweating. While Eggers denied having anything illegal in the vehicle and refused a consensual search, a K9 unit arriving on the scene provided a positive alert for narcotics on the rear driver-side door.

Kenneth Chenault

Before the vehicle search, Eggers informed officers that a female passenger earlier in the night had left a green bag in the vehicle, which he had placed in the center console. A subsequent search of the Jeep yielded the following items: a green bag in the center console containing a glass smoking device and a plastic baggie, both containing a crystal-like substance. In the back seat, officers found a backpack containing a small cut straw with a crystal-like substance, and in the front of the vehicle, officers found a hypodermic syringe inside a coffee cup that was still warm to the touch.

The crystal-like substance field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Both men denied ownership of the items.

Following their arrest and transport to the Lawrence County Jail, staff conducted further searches. During the booking process for Chenault, jailers discovered a syringe cap in his cargo pocket and a plastic baggie and a cut straw, both containing a powdered residue, inside his property bag.

The powdered substance tested positive for fentanyl. A deputy later stated he believed these items were inadvertently missed during the initial search on the scene.

Both Eggers and Chenault were placed in the custody of the Lawrence County Sheriff.

Teddy Eggers faces charges of possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, and obstruction of justice.

Kenneth Chenault faces charges of possession of meth, possession of a narcotic drug fentanyl, illegal possession of a syringe, possession of drug paraphernalia, and obstruction of justice.
