BEDFORD — A neighborhood dispute turned violent on Middle Avenue Thursday, resulting in the arrest of a local woman on felony charges after she reportedly attacked a neighbor with a handgun.
Jessi Petermichael, 41, of Bedford, was taken into custody by the Lawrence County Police Department and is facing preliminary charges of intimidation with a deadly Weapon and battery resulting in bodily injury.

The incident began on the afternoon of April 9, 2026, when Officer Thomas Porter responded to a report of a battery in the 90 block of Middle Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found the female victim with visible injuries, including facial redness, swelling above her right eye, and a distinct square-shaped bruise on her forearm—an injury police noted was consistent with the slide of a semi-automatic pistol.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Petermichael admitted to initiating the conflict. She told investigators she confronted the woman because she believed the woman had been making derogatory remarks about her mentally handicapped son. Petermichael reportedly approached a truck where the victim was sitting, pulled her partially through the window, and struck her multiple times with a closed fist.
The situation escalated when witnesses reported that Petermichael was armed with a handgun during the assault. A male who was at the scene told police he feared for the safety of the occupants of the truck, which included another adult and four children, ranging from an infant to small children.
The male witness reportedly retreated into his residence to retrieve a rifle and gave verbal commands for Petermichael to leave the property.
While Petermichael initially claimed her firearm—a Taurus G2 pistol—had remained in her vehicle during the fight, investigators reviewed Nest camera footage from her own residence. The video evidence reportedly showed Petermichael walking onto her front porch while holding a dark-colored handgun, contradicting her statement to police.
The investigation was a multi-agency effort involving the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police. Key evidence included multiple neighbors correctly identifying the specific make and model of Petermichael’s firearm, despite her claims that they had never seen it.
A white Nissan Titan parked near the altercation sustained damage to a window guard consistent with the struggle.
Police say home surveillance captured the defendant in possession of the weapon during the timeframe of the dispute.
Petermichael was arrested on charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony, and battery resulting in bodily injury, a Class A misdemeanor.
