WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a significant shift to national defense policy, the U.S. government will begin automatically registering all eligible men aged 18 to 25 for the military draft starting this December.
The move, mandated by the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), replaces the decades-old requirement for manual self-registration with the Selective Service System (SSS).

The policy change, signed into law by President Donald Trump in late 2025, allocates $31.3 million to the SSS to integrate its database with federal and state data sources, including the Social Security Administration and state DMV records.
Officials frame the transition as a modernization effort designed to increase administrative efficiency and ensure “deterrence through innovation.” By shifting the burden of registration from the individual to the government, the SSS aims to achieve near-total compliance among the roughly 15 million men in the eligibility pool.
“The goal is to ensure the Department of War maintains the overmatch necessary to win future conflicts,” an SSS implementation memo stated. While the U.S. has operated as an all-volunteer force since the end of the Vietnam War in 1973, the registry serves as a “ready-made mechanism” that could be activated during a national emergency.

The implementation arrives during a period of heightened military activity. Following the launch of Operation Epic Fury—a massive air and sea campaign against Iranian infrastructure initiated in February—public discourse regarding troop levels has intensified.
Though the conflict is currently in a ceasefire phase to allow for the transit of goods through the Strait of Hormuz, the administration has kept a firm stance. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted in March that while a draft is “not part of the current plan,” the President “wisely keeps his options on the table.”
“Loading Up and Resting,” President Trump posted on Truth Social recently. “If for any reason [the agreement] is not complied with… then the ‘Shootin’ Starts,’ bigger, and better, and stronger than anyone has ever seen before.”
The new system is currently awaiting finalization by the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA). Below are key details regarding the transition:
