Pain at the Pump: Indiana gas prices surge as global tensions escalate

INDIANA Hoosier motorists are facing a sharp increase in fuel costs this week as geopolitical volatility continues to rattle energy markets. According to the latest data from GasBuddy, average gasoline prices in Indiana have risen by 3.6 cents per gallon over the last week, settling at $ 3.93 per gallon as of today.

The spike is part of a broader, more aggressive trend; prices in Indiana are now 45.6 cents per gallon higher than just one month ago and a staggering 82.8 cents higher than this time last year.

The price of a gallon varies significantly depending on where you fill up. GasBuddy’s survey of 3,271 stations across the state found a massive $1.37 spread between the most and least expensive options.

  • Lowest Price in Indiana: $3.12/g
  • Highest Price in Indiana: $4.49/g

Regional neighbors are also seeing fluctuations, with some areas experiencing much steeper hikes than the state average.

Global Volatility: The “Strait” of Uncertainty

The national average price of gasoline currently sits at $4.07/g. While that number remained unchanged over the last seven days, experts warn that a “calm before the storm” is ending.

The primary driver for the expected surge is the deteriorating situation in the Middle East. While a brief ceasefire announcement by President Trump initially provided some relief to oil markets last week, a subsequent breakdown in negotiations and renewed military escalation over the weekend have sent crude prices soaring once again.

“Average gasoline prices surged through the first half of last week before easing after the ceasefire announcement,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “However, the move toward a full blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is compounding global supply concerns. Motorists should prepare for another round of price increases this week.”

The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most important oil transit chokepoint. A blockade there risks disrupting a significant portion of the global oil supply, impacting not just gasoline but also diesel, which rose 4.1 cents this week to an average of $5.617 per gallon.

Historical Context: A Five-Year Look

Today’s average of $3.93/g brings Indiana back to price levels not seen since the peak of the 2022 energy crisis.

Indiana Gas Price History (April 13):

  • 2026: $3.93/g
  • 2025: $3.10/g
  • 2024: $3.60/g
  • 2023: $3.72/g
  • 2022: $3.93/g
  • 2021: $2.78/g

With oil prices pushing higher in Sunday night trading, analysts suggest that unless there is a “meaningful restoration of shipping” through critical international waterways, the $4.00/g mark for Indiana may be just around the corner.
