SALEM — A new era has dawned for one of the most storied short tracks in American motorsports. Under the new 2026 ownership of Melissa Middleton and Brent Harmon, the 79-year-old Salem Speedway has undergone a massive transformation aimed at restoring the historic 0.555-mile high-banked oval to its former prestige.
The track has offered legendary racing since June 22, 1947. From dirt track dreams to paved perfection. Experience the rich heritage of Indiana’s most legendary short track.

For nearly eight decades, Salem Speedway has served as a proving ground for racing legends such as A.J. Foyt, Bobby Allison, Al Unser Sr., Mario Andretti, and Tony Stewart. Now, following 90 days of intense, around-the-clock renovations, the facility is ready to host a new generation of speed.
The renovation project touched nearly every corner of the property, focusing on both driver safety and the modern fan experience. Major upgrades include:
- Track & Pit Logistics: Crews installed new, custom-made pit gates and poles. To improve safety and flow, the track entrance was widened to allow for two-way traffic.
- Infrastructure: The facility received extensive electrical system upgrades, significant asphalt repair, and a fresh coat of paint across the grounds.
- Fan Amenities: The grandstands, concessions area, and VIP rooms were refurbished to provide a more comfortable experience for spectators.
The commitment to the facility doesn’t end with the season opener. Owners have already proposed further upgrades, including a new shower house for the camping area and designated VIP RV parking.
The track officially opened its gates for the 2026 season in late March with a revamped philosophy: blending high-stakes traditional racing with family-friendly spectacle.
The upcoming schedule promises a wide variety of events, including:
- Professional Racing: The return of the ARCA Menards Series, sprint cars, and late models.
- Action Entertainment: Drift events, monster truck rallies, demolition derbies, and the fan-favorite school bus races.
The revitalization of Salem Speedway represents a significant investment in the Southern Indiana sports landscape, ensuring the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile” remains a destination for race fans across the Midwest.
