INDIANA — Artists, community leaders, and local organizations across the Indiana Uplands have less than two weeks to finalize their applications for the READI 2.0 Arts and Culture Initiative. The grant deadline is set for April 15, 2026, at 5 p.m. ET.

This initiative represents a major statewide push to leverage arts and culture as a primary engine for economic growth and community vitality. Under the leadership of Governor Mike Braun and in partnership with the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC), the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) is preparing to award funds to projects that enhance the state’s “quality of place.”
A $60 Million Investment in Creativity
The funding stems from a landmark $60 million grant provided by the Lilly Endowment Inc. to the IEDC in early 2024. This investment was designed specifically to accelerate arts planning across Indiana.
For the 11-county Indiana Uplands region, the strategic roadmap for this funding is the Indiana Uplands Regional Arts and Culture Plan. Developed by Regional Opportunity Initiatives (ROI), this plan serves as the foundational document for any local project seeking a piece of the grant pool.
The “Uplands Framework”: Five Key Impact Areas
The regional plan wasn’t created in a vacuum. It was shaped by the voices of more than 140 local artists and residents through focus groups and “asset-mapping” sessions facilitated by the Public Sphere Project (PSP).
If you are currently drafting a grant application, ROI suggests aligning your project with one of the five identified Regional Impact Areas:
- Artisan Industry: Strengthening the business of local craft and making.
- Music: Enhancing the region’s rich sonic heritage and performance venues.
- Space + Place: Creative placemaking that turns public spaces into cultural hubs.
- Performing Arts: Supporting theater, dance, and live performance.
- Lifelong Learning: Expanding arts education and creative opportunities for all ages.
State and regional leaders view arts and culture not just as “perks,” but as essential tools for talent attraction and economic resilience. By investing in creative talent and cultural identity, the Uplands aims to position itself as a more vibrant place to live and work.
“The Indiana Uplands Arts and Culture Plan positions arts and culture as key drivers of community well-being,” ROI stated, noting that the plan is rooted in local voices to ensure the funding creates long-term impact.
