JASONVILLE — Authorities are working to determine the cause of a deadly house fire that claimed one life and left another person injured in Jasonville late this week.
The blaze broke out Thursday afternoon, March 19, at a residence near the intersection of North Horace and Hickory streets. The Jasonville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call at approximately 3:40 p.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered two victims suffering from severe burn injuries. According to Jasonville’s assistant fire chief, one victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second victim was treated for injuries; the current condition of the survivor has not been released.
Fire crews from multiple neighboring departments reportedly assisted in containing the flames to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures in the residential neighborhood.
The Indiana State Fire Marshal has been called in to lead the investigation, which is standard procedure for fires involving fatalities. Investigators remained on the scene throughout the evening to conduct a “cause and origin” analysis.
As of Saturday morning, officials have not released the identity of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin. No preliminary cause for the fire has been cited.
Jasonville, located in the northwest corner of Greene County, has seen a handful of residential fires in recent months. State data indicates that Greene County has recorded five fire-related fatalities since 2019, emphasizing a continued push by local departments for smoke detector awareness and home fire safety.
