Monroe County Waste Reduction District issues call for “Earth Stewardship” grant applications

BLOOMINGTON The Waste Reduction District (WRDMC) is officially inviting local organizations to turn their environmental ideas into action through its 2026 Community Earth Stewardship Grant program.

The District is currently accepting applications from non-profits, schools, and community groups looking to launch or expand programs centered on waste reduction, recycling, and composting. Whether your goal is to start a neighborhood composting initiative or transition your office to sustainable, recycled-content products, the District is offering the financial support to make it happen.

Grant Priorities and Eligibility

The Earth Stewardship Grant is designed to be a catalyst for local sustainability. Funding can be used for a variety of projects, including:

  • Program Development: Designing and implementing educational or operational programs that promote environmental stewardship.
  • Infrastructure & Supplies: Purchasing recycled-content products or equipment that facilitates better recycling and composting.
  • Sustainability Goals: Helping organizations meet specific “green” milestones that they may not have the current budget to achieve.

“Sometimes we get great ideas but don’t share them,” the District noted in their announcement. “It’s great to have an idea, but even greater to implement it.”

Deadlines and Requirements

Interested organizations should move quickly to finalize their proposals. Key dates for this grant cycle include:

  • Application Deadline: Friday, May 15, 2026.
  • Project Completion: All grant-funded projects must be completed by the end of the 2026 calendar year.

Applications and full program guidelines are available for download at wastereductiondistrict.com. For those who need assistance in the early planning stages or have questions about eligibility, the District’s staff is available for consultation.

  • Compost Bin & Rain Barrel Sale: Pre-orders are currently being taken through April 15 for discounted backyard composting kits and rain barrels. Items will be available for pickup on April 24 and 25 at the South Walnut Recycling Center.
  • Materials for the Arts: The District’s “Reuse Center” is open every Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., providing free, salvaged materials for art and community projects to teachers and non-profits.
  • Earth Day at Switchyard Park: Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 18, 2026, for the city’s annual Earth Day celebration from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
